چکیده

One of the law-like regularities of psychological science is that of developmental progression – an increase in sensorimotor, cognitive, and social functioning from childhood to adulthood. Here we report a rare violation of this law – a developmental reversal in attention. In Experiment 1, 4to-5-year-olds (N= 34) and adults (N = 35) performed a change detection task that included externally cued and uncued shapes. Whereas adults outperformed children on the cued shapes, children outperformed adults on the uncued shapes. In Experiment 2, the same participants completed a visual search task and their memory was tested for search-relevant and searchirrelevant information. Again, young children outperformed adults with respect to searchirrelevant features. This paradoxical reversal reveals a novel and surprising property of early attention, thus deepening our understanding of the development of attention. It also affects our understanding of early learning and of cognitive development more broadly.

Perceptual reversals need no prompting by attention.

Many ambiguous patterns elicit spontaneous alternations of phenomenal appearance. Attention is known to influence these phenomenal reversals, as do several other factors. We asked whether a shift of attention individually prompts each reversal of phenomenal appearance. By combining intermittent presentation with a proven method of attention control, we monitored phenomenal alternations in the c...

Letter naming and letter writing reversals in children with dyslexia: momentary inefficiency in the phonological and orthographic loops of working memory.

Given mounting evidence for working memory impairments in dyslexia, letter reversals during rapid automatic letter naming (phonological loop) or rapid automatic letter writing (orthographic loop) may reflect momentary inefficiency of working memory. Few of the children, with or without dyslexia, in a multi-generational family genetics study, produced reversals, but those with dyslexia produced ...

The Role of Attention in Ambiguous Reversals of Structure-From-Motion

Multiple dots moving independently back and forth on a flat screen induce a compelling illusion of a sphere rotating in depth (structure-from-motion). If all dots simultaneously reverse their direction of motion, two perceptual outcomes are possible: either the illusory rotation reverses as well (and the illusory depth of each dot is maintained), or the illusory rotation is maintained (but the ...

Psychophysical measurements in children: challenges, pitfalls, and considerations

Measuring sensory sensitivity is important in studying development and developmental disorders. However, with children, there is a need to balance reliable but lengthy sensory tasks with the child's ability to maintain motivation and vigilance. We used simulations to explore the problems associated with shortening adaptive psychophysical procedures, and suggest how these problems might be addre...

Sorting by Prefix Reversals

The pancake problem, which has attracted considerable attention, concerns the number of prefix reversals needed to sort the elements of an arbitrary permutation. The number of prefix reversals to sort permutations is also the diameter of the often studied n-dimensional Pancake network. We consider restricted pancake problem, when only k of the possible n− 1 prefix reversals are allowed.
